Today – September 27th, 2023 – the Indigenous Tourism Collaborative of the Americas (ITCA) joins the United Nations in celebration of World Tourism Day. ITCA and Indigenous tourism communities have much to celebrate in 2023 in the Americas and all around the world.
To learn more about World Tourism Day, you’ll enjoy reading the United Nations website article “Investing in People, Planet, and Prosperity,” which explains the need for World Tourism Day and makes clear that “the narratives of [world] tourism” need to be “recalibrated” for a more sustainable future. It makes the case, as does ITCA in its mission and day-to-day work, that sustainable and responsible development of world tourism is imperative to the future and health of the planet.
Since October of 2020, when nearly 300 Indigenous tourism organizations, travel entrepreneurs and academics came together to create ITCA, the Indigenous Tourism Collaborative of the Americas has worked to “recalibrate” tourism narratives by implementing a variety of strategies and initiatives to further develop sustainable tourism in Indigenous communities.
Below is a brief list of what ITCA is doing to support sustainable Indigenous tourism development and promotion:
1. ITCA holds quarterly discussions and planning meetings where participants from throughout the Americas share opportunities, challenges, ideas, tools and resources and direct actionable priorities into sustainable tourism projects and initiatives.
2. ITCA holds webinars, in-person events, and forums that bring together community, tourism and government leaders to discuss sustainable tourism development needs and priorities.
3. Most recently, ITCA created an Indigenous tourism eLibrary, an easily accessible inventory of tools and information. The eLibrary informs and educates Indigenous people as well as their stakeholders and partners who are at work in sustainable tourism. The resources in this eLibrary are continually being collected and expanded upon. All Indigenous tourism organizations around the world are highly encouraged to share e-Library resources with ITCA.
In addition to inviting you to join us in the United Nations celebration of World Tourism Day, ITCA also invites you to celebrate Indigenous tourism all-year-long by keeping up with the Collaborative’s projects, events and initiatives such as their Indigenous Tourism eLibrary.
